Drug Use Legislation

Drug use legislationDrug laws and the prohibition of illicit drug use has existed around the globe for many decades. In recent years, more successful and nonsuccessful attempts at improved drug use legislation have been made. Many of these drug use legislation successes have decriminalized the sale, use, and possession of certain drugs across Europe and worldwide.

For example, in Italy, a higher percentage of THC is now allowed in cultivated hemp plants. This move has caused many to dub “Rome as the New Amsterdam.” Canada has recently legalized recreational marijuana. Two states in the use have decriminalized psilocybin mushrooms. At Flight AMS, our team of editors will continue to monitor and report on the status of drug use legislation on a global scale.

Canada recently became the second country in the world to legalize recreational cannabis (the first country was Uruguay). The new cannabis law in the North American country permits the sale and consumption of recreational marijuana. The recent legalization or rather the decriminalization of marijuana was the culmination of a long-running campaign in the country by pro-marijuana activists and some of the country’s leading politicians including Prime Minister Trudeau. Many commentators around the world say that the legalization of marijuana in an important first world country like Canada will likely have a domino effect. That many more countries, particularly in the Western World, will likely follow the North American country’s footsteps and legalize the herb. Marijuana legislation in the US In the US, there are many variations of cannabis laws by state. This is because states are allowed by law to [...]

What are the Medical Benefits of CBD?

2019-10-08T06:23:02+00:00Sep, 30, 2019|

Cannabidiol, aka CBD, is one of the two essential cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. The other one is THC (tetrahydrocannabinol). It is these two cannabinoids that are largely responsible for the health benefits associated with cannabis. CBD alone is powerful enough to provide its own medical benefits. The cannabinoid’s benefits are referred to as CBD benefits or cannabis CBD benefits. How CBD Works The human body has two cannabinoid receptors namely the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The CB1 receptors are mostly present in the brain where they help control movement, coordination, emotions, pain, memories, and appetite. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are mostly present in the immune system. They help control pain and inflammation. It is the interactions between CBD and these two receptors that brings about several cannabis CBD benefits. CBD also interacts with serotonin receptors that [...]

New “Legal” Highs: Kratom and Methoxetamine

2019-10-08T05:48:47+00:00Sep, 16, 2019|

There is an increasing demand for legal highs not only in the Western World but also in places such as South Africa, Argentina, and Thailand. Legal highs are intoxicating synthetic drugs or natural substances whose use is not forbidden by law. Commonly used legal highs in the Western World include synthetic cannabinoids (e.g. K2 and spice) that mimic the euphoric and powerful effects of those found in the cannabis plant, and synthetic cathinones (bath salts) that mimic the effects of drugs such as cocaine and meth. Even though there are countries in the Western World such as the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia, that are increasingly placing restrictions on legal highs, most legal highs remain legal to buy and use for various purposes in many Western jurisdictions. Kratom and methoxetamine are among the legal highs on the [...]

2019-10-08T05:32:38+00:00Aug, 26, 2019|

MDMA, also known as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine or Molly, is a psychoactive compound that constitutes the main chemical ingredient in the recreational drug, ecstasy. Quite a number of studies have shown that MDMA can be used for the treatment and management of PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). Back in the 1900s, MDMA was used to help manage bleeding. Several decades later, in the mid-1970s, some psychiatrists started using it to manage PTSD. The science behind the use of MDMA in treating individuals with PTSD is based on one of the key symptoms of the disorder, which is escaping and avoiding emotions because of anxiety and re-trauma. MDMA, commonly referred to as “entactogen” or “empathogen” tends to enhance the feelings of trust and sympathy, and makes an individual aware of their emotions. MDMA as a therapeutic agent An important aspect as to why MDMA [...]

Psilocybin Legalization in the United States Psilocybin mushrooms aka magic mushrooms, shrooms, or magic fungi, are fungi that contain psilocybin – a naturally existing psychedelic compound. Humans have been using the mushrooms for a very long time. In the past, they were used for religious and spiritual rituals. Although some people still use them for religious activities, they are now primarily used for their therapeutic and recreational effects. The therapeutic effects include the ability to treat anxiety, addiction, depression, cluster headaches, and OCD, while the most sought-after recreational effect is the mind-revealing psychedelic experience. Despite the plant being native to so many regions across the world and having proven therapeutic benefits, it was listed by the UN as a Schedule 1 drug in 1971. Schedule 1 drugs are those without any known medical benefits. Because of this listing, several countries [...]
